Trex

“I’m fine,” Talia told him for the fifth time, brushing him off as he fussed over her.

He could tell ever since they left the cavern that something was wrong. She refused to tell him, though, and she had been avoiding eye contact and shied away from his touch.

Trex kept thinking over everything he had witnessed, trying to find the source of the problem, but he couldn’t. She had seemed so sure in her feelings, and he thought that she would receive him more joyfully.

He wondered if she was regretting standing up for him or if his kiss had gone too far. Humans had so many weird rules around their mating rituals that he was unsure.

Before he could say anything else, though, he heard Talia’s stomach rumble. She had grown hungry. He stood to retrieve her bag that he had left in the corner, but when he lifted it, he realized it was now empty.

“I ate the last of it earlier,” she muttered, still not really looking at him.

“I can go hunt for something.”

She didn’t respond, so he turned towards the door, not really sure what it was that she would want to eat. He was sure that maybe he could find a creature or plant for her.

“…no diamonds.”

Trex was barely able to make out any of the words she mumbled, having already left the room. He continued down the path instead of going back. She probably wouldn’t repeat it for him anyway.

He worked his way back up the path to a spot where he knew water was abundant. Where there was a life source, there were bound to be small animals for him to catch.

Just outside of the cave containing the small pool, Trex saw a familiar figure coming towards him. He was having a hard time making out who it was in the dimness of the cave until the dragon clapped him on the shoulder.

“It is so good to see you,” Rayek said, pulling him into a hug.

“The same to you.” He pulled back to look at his friend, surprised that he was out this far. “What are you doing up here?”

“It hasn’t been the same since you were pushed out. Kalzor has been on a warpath, trying to instill the control he once had. Believe it or not, but some of the younger fledglings and clan members saw what you did and admire you.”

“It seemed like everyone hated me, actually.”

Rayek let out a low whistle, nodding. “I heard that Kalzor pretty much tore into you once you came back.”

“No one stopped him, either. They stood by and watched as I was exiled again after doing what they asked of me.”

“That’s what I am telling you. Ever since the whole explosion thing, Kalzor has been tearing into everyone. He wants every idea, decision, pretty much anything to go through him. We can barely breathe without his permission right now.

“You really rattled him, and it’s making him look weak. I just don’t think he can see it.”

Trex chuckled. “He did seem a bit desperate when I ran into him.
